Map an exact place
Savannah's map is a work of deliberate genius. When James Oglethorpe laid out the city in 1733, he created a repeating pattern of wards — each centred on a public square, flanked by residential lots, and edged by commercial streets. The result, visible on any map, is a rhythm of open squares marching through a grid of tree-lined streets. Twenty-two of the original twenty-four squares survive, and on a map they appear as a perfect necklace of green voids. No American city has a more elegant plan.

Oglethorpe's Squares
The squares are everything. On a map, they appear as a regular pattern of green rectangles embedded in the grid — Chippewa, Madison, Monterey, Forsyth. Each one is roughly the same size, spaced at regular intervals, creating a visual rhythm that's almost musical. The Sage theme makes these squares glow with gentle green against the warm surrounding grid, revealing the plan's quiet brilliance.
The River's Edge
The Savannah River forms the city's northern boundary, and River Street runs along its bank on the old cotton warehouse bluffs. On a map, the river is a wide, dark ribbon separating Georgia from South Carolina, with the grid stepping down to meet it. Hutchinson Island sits just offshore. The Midnight Blue theme gives the riverfront a moody, atmospheric quality — the water dark, the streets luminous.
Every Square Tells a Story
Whether it's the square where you got married, the bench where you read your first Flannery O'Connor novel, or the live-oak canopy you walked under on a summer evening — Savannah is personal in a way that maps capture perfectly. Zoom in, centre on your favourite square, and let the Rustic palette give it the warm patina it deserves.
